Why did you launch The Work at Home Woman?

I had been employed as a nurse for many years in many different roles, but it was a really stressful career that I didn’t enjoy. So when I got pregnant with my daughter, I immediately started planning for my transition out of the workforce.

Once she was born, I quit my full-time nursing job and became a stay-at-home mom. But after months of play-dates, a dwindling bank account, and mommy mush brain I decided it was time to look for a side job that I could do from home.

While I was able to find a freelance job through a friend, my online research for a remote job proved to be fruitless, and this is where I got the idea for the website. I figured if I had such a difficult time finding a legit work-at-home gig other moms must be having the same issue. I launched the website in March of 2009. For many years, I worked both my freelance gig and on my website (I guess you could call me a chicken entrepreneur).

In 2015, I finally dropped my freelance job and started to focus all of my energy on The Work at Home Woman. Today running the site is my full-time business, and I couldn’t be happier!

What brings visitors to your website?

Women (we even some male readers) come to site to find legit work-at-home job leads, work-at-home ideas, ways to make extra money, as well as information on starting and running a business.

What advice would you give to someone starting their first business?

Take action. It doesn’t matter how big or small the step is, you just need to get started. All too often aspiring entrepreneurs get caught up in the planning stage or what I call analysis paralysis. But eventually you just need to make the leap and start. And yes, you’ll make mistakes along the way, all entrepreneurs do, but it’s all part of the journey.

Do you have an offer to share with the Business Among Moms community?

Yes! Over the years, readers have been asking me how I got started on my blogging journey, so I wrote an e-book on how I got started. This blogging e-book is 54-pages, and it’s jam-packed with tons of practical, actionable tips on how to create killer content, increase traffic to your blog, and most importantly, make money from it!
