Why Did You Start Your Business?

After being an art docent, (aka volunteer art teacher,) for over 13 years, I was disappointed that visual arts education was still not getting funded properly in most elementary schools, so I started Outside the Box Creation to make it easy for parents to give their children more art education. I am also acutely aware that not all children have parents who can or will purchase the boxes for them, so I donate boxes and supplies to several schools and volunteer as a docent at a juvenile detention center. We launched the Art With Friends adult boxes because so many parents thought doing art was fun!

What Do People Love About Your Business?

Parents love receiving the boxes with absolutely everything they need for 1 or 2 children. They do not need to have any prior experience or expertise in art and they do not have to spend time purchasing or looking for supplies. They also appreciate the quality of the art supplies and the fact that our boxes are not the “one and done” kind of kits that most other companies offer. Often kids will have supplies left over and can keep using them for days or weeks after they complete their first project.

What are people saying about Outside the Box Creation?

“We homeschool and have been using Outside the Box as our Art Curriculum. In the past I’ve had trouble fitting art in to our schedule even though I really wanted to. Outside the Box makes it so easy we are now doing art regularly. My kids love it and so do I. Plus they have great customer service. I’m using it with all 4 of my kids at once preschool through 5th grade and everyone is able to work on the same project just at their own ability level. I love the ideas for extending the project. We often get several projects out of one box just by extending the ideas presented and mixing in our own art supplies. I highly recommend it.” – Julie Gammache

“Rainy days, play dates, road trips. This has is ALL, in one box, that can travel… or not. My go-to that lights my daughters creativity. Love.”a month agoOutside the Box Creation boxes are so much fun that it feels like opening a present every month when we receive our box. We are signed up for the month-to-month subscription for large families. The box seems like an excellent value because it contains a large amount of high-quality art supplies along with a book that goes with the theme of the project. – Cassandra Delaune

I have never felt competent at art, but even I really enjoy the projects. My 3 kids enjoy them too! Everything needed is included in the box along with clear instructions. We typically work on the project together and I feel like I learn as much as my children.

I also love the boxes the projects come in. I can store the leftover supplies from each project neatly in the box so that we can continue a variation on the theme later.

I highly recommend Outside the Box Creation!”

If you were to start your business all over, what advice do you wish you had received?

Gosh, I feel like I went into this with my eyes pretty wide open. Of course this last year, my first, has been filled with all kinds of learning. I think probably the most helpful piece of advice I would have liked to receive would have been not to expect growth to be fast! The company is growing more slowly than I had anticipated, but the growth is very solid and sustainable. The other advice that would have been helpful, is that the key to success is showing up every single day and doing what needs to be done.
