Facebook Etiquette: Don’t Become THAT Person!

Let’s face it-there are many annoying business owners on Facebook.  We’ve all come across them, those that post frequently, post about nonsense, make ridiculous requests, spam your wall, etc.  There are lots of ways one can be annoying on Facebook, but one thing’s for sure-you don’t want to be THAT person!

So just what are the best practices for Facebook page owners?  If you google the term, you’ll come across lots of ideas on how to make sure you’re acting appropriately on Facebook.  The problem, though, is that many of these lists apply to larger businesses, and, as we know, mom-run businesses have unique needs and the way we communicate on Facebook is just as unique.  So I’ve scoured these so called “rules” for you and condensed them into a list of the ten that are most relavent to mompreneurs and the Facebook pages we run.  Take note so that you do not become THAT person and your business doesn’t suffer because of it!

1.  Do not ask for likes

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone comes to my page, says they’ve liked it, and asks me to like theirs.  It’s not that big of a deal, I suppose, but it just rubs me the wrong way.  Instead of asking for someone to come and like your page or to “return the favor,” give them a friendly invitation to stop by.  Something like, “Hey, new fan of your page!  I love the hair bows you offer, so cute!  I’m a fellow Mompreneur…feel free to stop by my page and say hello if you’d like.”  Getting them to your page is 90% of the battle.  Once they’re there, have enough respect for them to make their own decision on whether or not they want to become a fan or not.

2.  Don’t spam other people’s walls

Unless a page specifically allows promotion and states as much somewhere on their page, do not post about your business.  It’s very rude to go onto someone else’s page that they’ve strategically worked to build and clog it with information about your business.  There are many pages that do allow you to post on their wall, so seek those out and post away.  We’re one of them, so feel free to post on our page anytime.

3.  Play fairly in tagging events

If you choose to participate in an event like our Taggin’ Tuesday, where you post your page for other people to like, please play fairly and follow the rules the page owner has set forth.  The most important rule is to like all of the other pages that participate.  If you plan to reap the benefits of receiving new fans from an event, it’s only fair that you return the favor and like the other pages too.  Afterall, it’s the only way something like this actually works.  Also, if the page owner sets forth other rules, like asking you to give them a shout out or share the event, please do so.  The page owner is offering you a free opportunity to share your business, it’s the very least you can do.

4.  Don’t post back to back

The last thing you want to do is clog up the newsfeeds’ of your fans.  First off, it gets the messages you’re trying to send jumbled up, making them less effective.  Secondly, it makes you very irritating to the fan and the odds of them “unliking” your page or hiding you from their newsfeed increase greatly.  Make sure that you’re only posting when absolutely necessary.  I wouldn’t do more than 10 a day, and that’s being very generous.  Five would be more realistic.  Also, make sure that what you’re posting is different.  If you have a sale going on, don’t post the same thing all 5 of those times.  It’s not only annoying, but it carries less of a rank when you repeat things and isn’t likely to get your posts shown into newsfeeds.

5.  Engage with your fans

If someone takes the time to post a message to you on your page, it’s only fair that you answer them.  I try to make sure that all new fans that post on the wall and all comments that are made are responded to.  It’s not only a good thing to do to provide good customer service, it will also help increase your edgerank too.

6.  Follow the rules

Facebook does have a few rules for page owners, and  unfortunately, I see them violated all the time.  Not only does it put you at risk for having your fan page deleted, it also sends a bad message about you and your business, giving people the impression that you think you’re “above the rules.”  Most notably, I see people not following the rules about cover photos and giveaways.  Review Facebook’s guidelines for pages and be sure that everything you’re doing is in accordance with their guidelines.  Whether or not you agree with them is irrelevant.  They provide this platform for us, it’s only fair that we play by the rules they set.

7. Don’t abuse the messages feature

With the new message feature for pages, it can become quite easy for people to abuse this tool. I’ve already become inundated with spam messages myself.  Please only use this as a direct line of communication between you and a page for actual business purposes.

8.  Don’t start or encourage drama

Quite often, I see page owners venting about a customer or a fan of their page.  Not cool.  We all have issues and deal with “problem children” who are simply thorns in our sides, but venting about them in a public forum is not the way to handle the situation.  Your professional reputation is on the line and doing so will do nothing but damage it.  You don’t want people to perceive you as one who gets easily frustrated or who airs out their dirty laundry.  Save your battles for private emails and feel free to vent to your lovely husband at the end of the day with a glass of merlot. That’s what they’re both there for!

9.  Watch your spelling and grammar

I know that we’re not all english majors here, but a simple proofread of what you write before you click that post button is essential!  Spelling and grammar errors drastically damage your professionalism and you can’t afford to come across as ignorant and uneducated.

10.  The golden rule

This is a simple one, really, but it’s the one that often gets overlooked.  Say please, say thank you.  Be gracious.  Be kind.  Coming across as simply a “nice” person will go a long way to drawing people to your business!

As a new “mompreneur” I was wondering what the rules might be and I have been one of those that has “unliked” a page simply because they posted so much I couldn’t see what everyone else was up to! And the thing is, I would have liked to have their updates…just less of them!

  3. I totally agree with all your points! Those things bug me, too! There is a woman I know who I don’t even want to SEE at the grocery store because she’s so pushy on FB with her business. I wrote on a friend’s wall one time how we should go get mani-pedis and this gal jumped in and said how her candle company now has a spa line. OK….we all know we can do our nails at home- that’s not the point LOL.
    I’m excited about the message feature- luckily I haven’t gotten spammed there yet but I have on Pinterest so now I really check somebody out before I “follow” others back.

  14. I like this post, very good info. My thought on the Facebook Tuesdays, is this… although I appreciate all the likes from biz..what I realllllly want, is likes from potential clients. A biz like is fine, it helps raise the LIKE number, but that doesn’t actually speak to your value to potential customers…just sayin’ If I am missing something here, please let me know. I am new to this gig:)

    • Mary, the likes that you get from tagging events are from the business owners, so yes, they are potential clients. They make purchases too. :) Tagging events are two fold…they help connect you to potential customers and they also help to boost your numbers, which in turns boosts your business’s reputation. :)

  17. I have a question regarding Taggin Tuesday and Fan Page Friday. Somewhere I thought I read that we are to say something to the effect of…Hi Happy Tagging Tuesday. New fan from Bam….and leave our business page link since we are liking from our personal page we know who the person is that is liking our page. I thought I also read somewhere that by doing this we are raising the “Talking About This” stats and the page stats. Is this correct? Are we not suppose to say anything and just click LIKE on thes pages that participate?

    • You’re correct, Randy. You should definitely say something like that during a tagging event. It’s one of the exceptions to “spamming” other people as they’re asking for new likes. And yes, the more interaction a page has, the higher the “talking about this” number will be. :)
