Sunny with a Chance of Change

Amy Palmerton • Apr 24, 2022

Change is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road.

Moving from my home in Southern California to the lakeshore in Southwest Michigan spun my life from comfort to chaos.  Family relationships changed forever. Loss of church and community and culture in a single summer.  Loneliness and dreariness were my constant companions as I transitioned from 72 and sunny to chances for snow from Halloween to Mothers Day. Stay at home married with children stay to full time working single mom of four.  These are the transitions that will make and mold you and your family.  These are the moments that you take personal inventory, find a community, and forge a path forward to make the most of what life has presented.  We are not the only women who have walked in these shoes - and it might take time to find companionship as we go- but we will find each other. The brave, the tenacious, the gritty, the curious, the enthusiastic entrepreneurs and inventors who have never stopped making a way out of no way.

Being a parent is a beautiful opportunity, allowing you to contribute to the human life cycle; but with it comes serious responsibility. It’s more so as a mom because right from when you give birth to your adorable kids, you are immediately responsible for their safety, and this takes on different forms. Their health is your concern, and when they grow past toddlers, up comes the need to send them to school. You want to push them through elementary, junior high, high school, and then college. All in all, your priorities change once you become a mom. All the necessary stages your family passes through require adequate resources.

Are you afraid to want more? Many times women feel ashamed or scared to want another identity besides their “Momma” title. I want you to know that wanting to work on a business or side project that brings you joy does not make you a bad mom. Thankfully, motherhood is so much more rewarding than challenging. Don’t get me wrong…there are days I cry in the closet (or a hallway…whichever is closer), but it is all worth it! If you are feeling depleted or that there is a void, it could be that you are not feeding your need for more or the very unique calling that has been placed on your life that only you can fulfill.

The misconception that a mom cannot run a thriving business and have a good relationship with their family is quite prevalent. In actuality it just takes more effort to create this balance but it is more than possible. The tough part about being in charge of a business is not bringing a bad day home with you. Being able to compartmentalize is going to be imperative as you do not want to scream at your kids because the marketing team failed on their latest campaign. This is going to take cooperation from your significant other as well as caring for the kids will be a true team effort. The following are tips for a mom to balance her time between a successful business and her family.

Whether you have a brick and mortar business or you run your business online, Facebook can still be a great way to reach new clients and customers. It’s true that it has gotten harder for business to make an impact on Facebook without out shelling out some cash, but it’s not impossible. (Plus, in the grand scheme of advertising, Facebook is still a very inexpensive place to advertise!) Here are a few of the ways my clients and I use Facebook to find customers.
